Why is my Telegram account banned?

Telegram usually restricts or bans an account because of user reports, spam-like behavior or a Terms of Service violation, and sometimes because of the phone number itself. Most of the time the account is not fully banned. It is limited, frozen or blocked from contacting strangers, and each of those has a different fix.

Telegram's privacy policy, as quoted by Radist's documentation, says moderators can check messages that recipients have reported. If the report is confirmed, the account may be restricted from contacting strangers, temporarily or permanently. In more serious cases the account may be blocked.

In our experience the triggers fall into a few groups:

  • Reports from other users. Sending the same message to many people who did not ask for it is the classic cause.
  • Behavior that looks automated. Joining many groups quickly, adding strangers to groups in bulk or messaging a long list of new contacts right after sign-up.
  • Content that breaks the Terms of Service. Scams, phishing, illegal goods, and similar material.
  • The phone number. The same Telegram spam FAQ, as quoted by Radist, says some numbers get a harsh reaction because of what a previous owner did or because they are virtual or VoIP numbers.
  • Third-party apps and unofficial clients. We cannot point to an official statement on this, so treat it as a risk factor rather than a rule.

Telegram does not publish a full list of what its anti-spam systems look for, so any list of triggers, including ours, is partly inference.

Step by stepAppeal a Telegram ban
  1. Screenshot the notice and note any appeal date
  2. Update the official Telegram app
  3. Stop messaging new people
  4. Send /start to @SpamBot and read the status
  5. Submit one short, honest appeal
  6. Use Telegram support if you cannot log in

Is it a ban, a limit, a freeze or a spam block?

These are different states, and the first step in recovery is knowing which one you are in. As of October 2026, the labels and screens differ between app versions, so match what you see to the descriptions below rather than to exact wording.

StateWhat you can still doWhere to appeal
Spam limitMessage people who saved your number, reply to anyone who writes first, use groups you are already in@SpamBot
Frozen (read-only)Read your chats, but not send messages or postSubmit an Appeal button on the notice, before the date shown
Number or account blockedOften nothing; you may be logged out and unable to sign inTelegram support form

The limit and freeze descriptions follow AwareXone's guide to frozen accounts, which in turn relies on Telegram's spam FAQ. The frozen state is the one with a deadline: that guide says the account is deleted if you do not appeal before the date on the notice. Write that date down as soon as you see it.

A spam block is not the same as a shadowban-style reach problem. If your messages send but nobody sees them, that is a different issue. For a comparable situation on another platform, see our guide to checking and fixing a Twitter shadowban.

How do I check what is wrong with my Telegram account?

Open a chat with @SpamBot from the affected account and send /start. The bot is Telegram's official tool for spam limits, and its reply tells you whether a limit is active and whether it has an end date.

According to Meliora Lab's breakdown of the bot's replies, the main answers mean this:

  • No limits applied. There is no spam limit now. If messages still fail, look at your connection, the app version or the other person's privacy settings.
  • Limited until a date. A temporary limit. It lifts on its own, and you appeal only if you are sure it is a mistake.
  • Limited with no date. It will not lift by itself, so an appeal is the way forward.
  • A note that some phone numbers trigger a harsh response. The number caused it, not what you sent. Say so in your appeal.

If you cannot open any chat, because the app logs you out or shows an error at sign-in, you are likely dealing with a number or account block rather than a spam limit. Skip to the section on login problems below.

How do I unban my Telegram account step by step?

Appealing means describing, honestly and briefly, what you use Telegram for and why you think the restriction is wrong. Telegram's moderators make the final decision, and nobody can promise the outcome. Menu labels change between app versions, so adapt these steps if your screen looks different.

  1. Record what you see. Take a screenshot of any notice, including an appeal date if there is one.
  2. Update the app. Use the official Telegram app from your app store or telegram.org, not a modified client.
  3. Stop sending. Do not message new people or join and add people to groups while you wait. More activity from a limited account can make things worse.
  4. Start with @SpamBot. Send /start and read the status. If the notice on your account has a Submit an Appeal button, use it. AwareXone reports that it opens the same bot.
  5. Choose the appeal or complaint option the bot offers and follow its questions.
  6. Write one short, honest explanation. Say what you use the account for, what you sent recently and, if it applies, that the number is new to you. Do not copy a template full of claims you cannot back up, and do not make false statements.
  7. Wait for the reply. Do not submit the same appeal over and over. Repeated submissions add noise, not weight.

Telegram does not publish a fixed review time as far as we could find. Third-party sources disagree: Radist says a first block lasts about 24 hours, while AwareXone says a first limit usually lasts a few days. Treat both as rough reports, not promises.

What if my Telegram phone number is banned and I cannot log in?

If the app will not let you sign in or says the number is banned, @SpamBot usually cannot help, because you cannot reach it. Use Telegram's support channels instead. Radist's documentation, quoting Telegram's materials, lists two: in the app, go to Settings and look for Ask a Question, or send a request through the form at telegram.org/support.

Write the request from the same number and keep it factual. Include the number in international format, the exact message you see, when it started and what the account was used for. Skip long stories and anger.

Be realistic about the outcome. Metricgram's guide advises people to stop trying once the official routes are exhausted, and we agree with that approach. Some bans on serious Terms of Service violations are not reversed. Registering new accounts again and again to get around a ban is itself the kind of behavior Telegram acts against, so we do not recommend it.

If you only lost access because you were logged out, that is a different problem. Check your devices first with our guide to Telegram active sessions and how to end them.

I bought a Telegram account and it was limited. What now?

Start the same way as any other owner: check @SpamBot, then appeal if the bot offers it. Be honest in the appeal. If the number is new to you, the Telegram spam FAQ as quoted by Radist invites you to explain that.

We also want to be plain about the context. Telegram's Terms of Service restrict buying, selling and transferring accounts, and Telegram can limit or remove accounts that it believes are involved in that. Any account purchase carries this risk, and no seller can remove it. That is why we hand accounts over in a specific way. We move the account to the buyer's phone number, and the buyer sets up two-step verification (2FA) and reviews the active sessions.

Our checklist for buying a social media account safely covers what to check before and after a handover. After a purchase, avoid heavy outreach in the first days. A new owner who suddenly messages many strangers looks the same to Telegram's systems as a spammer.

How do I avoid getting my Telegram account banned again?

You cannot make an account ban-proof, but ordinary, low-volume use reduces the risk a lot. Most of what follows is about not looking like spam, because reports from other users are the trigger Telegram itself describes.

  • Message people who expect to hear from you. Contacts, customers who wrote first and members of your own community are fine. Cold messages to strangers are the fastest route to reports.
  • Do not send identical text in bulk. Vary your messages and keep volume modest.
  • Add people to groups only with their agreement. Mass adding is a common trigger for reports.
  • Warm up a new account slowly. Use it normally, with a profile, a few chats and gradual activity, before any outreach.
  • Use the official app. Avoid modified clients and automation tools that act on your behalf.
  • Secure the account. Turn on two-step verification and review your sessions, so a stranger cannot misuse it and get it reported.
  • Use a number you control long term. Virtual numbers and recycled numbers are the ones Telegram's spam FAQ flags as a risk.

Questions people also ask

Can I unban my Telegram account myself?

Sometimes. If the problem is a spam limit, message @SpamBot, check the status and appeal if you think it is a mistake. If the limit has an end date, it lifts on its own. For serious Terms of Service bans, Telegram's moderators decide, and you may not get the account back.

How long does a Telegram ban last?

It depends on the type. Temporary spam limits end on a date that @SpamBot shows. Limits with no date and account blocks do not end on their own. We did not find an official fixed duration, and third-party sources give different figures, so rely on what the bot tells you.

Does a Telegram ban affect my phone number?

It can. Telegram's spam FAQ, as quoted by Radist, says some numbers cause strong anti-spam reactions because of a previous owner or because they are virtual numbers. If you are blocked on a number, contact Telegram support from that number and explain.

Will deleting and reinstalling Telegram remove a ban?

No. Limits and bans are tied to your account and number on Telegram's side, not to the app on your device. Reinstalling will not lift them and may log you out. Check @SpamBot and appeal through the official routes instead.

Can I still use Telegram while my account is limited?

Usually yes, in a reduced way. As described in a third-party guide based on Telegram's spam FAQ, you can still message people who saved your number and reply to anyone who writes first. You cannot start chats with strangers. A frozen account is read-only.

Should I pay someone to recover my banned Telegram account?

We would not. The appeal channels are free and run by Telegram, and no outside party can overrule its moderators. Services that promise to restore a ban for a fee often cannot deliver, and some are scams. Use the official routes first.
